Wai Care Week 6

Water Treatment and Water Pollution - Week 6
Insert 3 powerful images that clearly show water pollution from around the different parts of our world. For each image, briefly mention which country it is associated to and another interesting fact about it ie. photographer, people in it, why you chose it.

Extremely littered beach in northern Norway.South Sentinel island is covered with plastic! Plastic pollution and marine debris, South Sentinel Island, Bay of Bengal.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

‘The Ocean Cleanup’ - complete a plus, minus and interesting of this design.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IjaZ2g-21E
Plus
Minus
Interesting
He is taking rubbish out of the ocean, and spreading awareness to others
He is young (19), and making a change to the environment.

There is so much rubbish , and he can’t get it all. It will take a long time to get the rubbish.
He invents/makes his own rubbish-collecting machines. He is only 19.

Are there any other scientific or technological designs already operating to tackle the problem of pollution in oceans around the world? There is the guy in the video’s machine, and there are a few others, using things like vacuum technology
Could you design an even better design of a machine/technology that could solve the problem of pollution in ocean?Consider; manpower, manpower to run/operate the machine, if any fuel would be used to power it, carbon emissions and the speed of what it could do. Either write briefly or sketch a diagram of your proposed prototype.
Our machine is like a vacuum. It sucks up the dirty water and filters it to make it clean and then puts it back into the ocean. It also vacuums up the rubbish and puts it into a separate tank to be emptied out at the dump or rubbish collection area later on.

Plastic in our ocean is a big problem…
An even bigger problem in our ocean is microbeads. An example of this; some face washes and exfoliants use the plastic microbeads to exfoliate dead skin cells rather than using natural products/materials. The beads then enter the stormwater drains which end up in rivers and go out to sea.  Read this website and  https://www.beatthemicrobead.org/en/scienceSummarise in 3 sentences the main ideas of what you read: Today, a significant number of personal care products such as scrubs and toothpastes are known to contain thousands of minuscule balls of plastic called microplastics, or more specifically, microbeads. Over the years, microbeads have replaced traditional, biodegradable alternatives such as ground nut shells, and salt crystalsOffer a suggestion to the problem.  I Think that people should think before they throw or drop their rubbish in the sea instead the could make the world better by just putting their rubbish in the bin.Design a powerful slogan to the companies that produce this product, (might be easier in google drawing or to complete this by hand and then insert it into this doc).

How is Water Treated?Complete the mixing and matching activity to show how it is collected, screened, clumped, oxygen added, separated, filtered, chemicals added and sent to a reservoir(We completed it in our books)
SwedenThis country is trying to tackle the problem of too much rubbish ending up in landfills. Watch the clip and read the website. What do you think of their strategy? Why have other countries not followed suit already? Are there any negatives you can think of? https://sweden.se/nature/the-swedish-recycling-revolution/
MY THOUGHTS…I think their idea is great, and very effective. If everyone in the world used this idea, we would be full of very clean, pollution- free countries. I think other countries haven’t done this yet because they think it would be a big job, because some countries are much larger than sweden .
